Volunteering at High School
In the fall of 2017, I contacted the local high school Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher. I asked if I could help her in her classroom to help be better prepare for student teaching. She agreed to let me come. While I was there, I learned to love my major all over again. I was in the classroom talking with the students and helping out with their labs. About halfway through my time there, the students started to come to me for help just like they did their teacher. I was also able to see how that teacher did her fund raising for her classes and for FCCLA. While I was there, I was able to see how this teacher dealt with discipline. Overall, I am glad that I was able to go and see how her classroom was ran. I had a lot of fun and got a lot of resources that I can use in my future class. In the process, I made a new friend and ally in my profession.

Wedding Quilt
The quilt to the left is the quilt that I made for my brother when he got married. I made the quilt because my brother wanted a Grandma McAllister quilt. Our Grandma McAllister had past away less than a year before the wedding. However, my grandma was the one who taught me how to quilt, so I made my brother a quilt in the style that my grandma would do. The hardest way possible. The quilt top its self took about two month to complete. Each of the blocks are made up of one inch or two inch squares. I designed to the quilt my self and went of the pattern I had drawn. By the time I was done with the quilt, it could fit a king sized bed. Once the top was done, I contacted a local long arm quilter who let me use her quilter to quilt the quilt together, just like my grandma did. The binding on the quilt is also hand sewn to replicate what my grandma did. However, this is not a perfect quilt. I learned new skills and new ways of putting a quilt together that will make it easier the next time I make a quilt this big. For example, if you wash the quilt after you quilt it all together, the quilt will shrink at the same rate and help hid some miner mistakes. I washed all my fabric first. I also could have cut different sizes of squares so that I did not have so many square to sew together.
My brother likes deer, so there are deer on this quilt. |
